The three numbers that actually determine wood pellet quality, and why they matter more than the certification label alone.
A certification label tells you a pellet passed a testing scheme. The three underlying numbers tell you how it will actually perform in a boiler. If you're comparing suppliers, these are the figures worth asking for directly.
Moisture content is the single biggest driver of usable heat. Every percentage point of water in a pellet is energy spent evaporating that water instead of heating your space. Certified pellets typically run at or below 10% moisture — ask for the actual tested figure on the batch you're buying, not just the certification ceiling.
Ash content determines how much residue is left behind after combustion, and by extension how often a boiler needs cleaning. Lower ash generally means a cleaner raw material with less bark content mixed into the pellet. This is the parameter that varies most between ENplus grades — see our A1 vs A2 comparison for the specific tolerances.
Net calorific value (measured in kWh/kg) is the actual energy content you're paying for. Two pellets with identical moisture can still differ slightly in calorific value depending on the wood species and how completely the pellet was dried and compressed.
Together, these three numbers are a far more useful comparison tool than a certification logo alone — two ENplus A1 pellets from different suppliers can still differ within the certified tolerance range.
