How to Store Wood Pellets Correctly

Wood pellets are only as good as their storage. A short guide to keeping quality intact from delivery to burn.

Wood pellets are engineered to be dense and dry — which also makes them sensitive to moisture in a way raw firewood isn't. Poor storage is the single most common reason a good pellet underperforms, and it's almost entirely preventable.

Keep them off the ground and under cover. Pellets sitting directly on concrete or soil absorb ambient moisture even indoors. A pallet, shelf, or raised platform, combined with a dry roof over the storage area, solves most of the problem before it starts.

Leave them in sealed packaging until use where possible. Our 15kg and 10kg bags are designed to stay sealed in storage; only open what you're about to load into the appliance. For bulk or big-bag storage, a dedicated pellet silo or hopper keeps the material both dry and easy to feed.

Watch for swelling or crumbling. This is the clearest sign of moisture damage — a pellet that's absorbed water will physically expand and break apart, at which point it can no longer feed properly through an auger system and has largely lost its value as fuel.

Don't mix old and new stock carelessly. Rotate storage so older deliveries get used first, particularly if you're storing across a full heating season. Properly sealed and kept dry, wood pellets have a long shelf life — moisture exposure is a far bigger risk to quality than age alone.

If you're planning storage for a large delivery, our delivery process page covers packaging formats — crated, palletized, or bulk — and our sales desk can help you plan an order size and format that matches the storage space you actually have.
